18th Street Art Center Santa Monica, CA
18th Street Arts Center is an artists’ residency program that provokes public dialogue through contemporary art-making. Founded in 1988, 18th Street Arts Center has fostered and supported the work of many of Los Angeles’ most engaging and diverse artists, and has built bridges to artist communities around the globe. Growth, building maintenance and programmatic changes have necessitated considerations for the future. The new master plan is a phased approach to replacing the current gallery and administrative offices with a new state of the art building. Another single story artist studio building is being replaced with a new 18,000 square foot five-story mixed-use artist studio live/work space, a gallery and rooftop event space. Other improvements include a new 1000 square foot café and rehabilitation of other buildings in the complex. This new work together with the existing structures will be organized to create a series of major exterior public event spaces where artists and the general public can co-mingle.
