41st Street Miami Beach Urban Plan Miami Beach, FL
Over the years 41st Street has waned as other signature areas of Miami Beach; Ocean Drive, West Avenue, and Lincoln Road, Collins Park; have developed into vibrant districts centered on tourist and residents alike. Although 41st Street is the “spine” or “Main Street” of Mid Beach and the Bayshore/Nautilus Neighborhoods, the street has primarily become a traffic corridor that motorists drive-through in order to get to other destinations. The project approach develops key nodes and gateways within a revitalized streetscape, what is referred to as Walks and Oases. Walks are areas where minimal investments will be delivered. These areas maintain the Royal Palm canopy and upgrade hardscape and softscape surfaces. The Walks serve to connect the Oases, or “Urban Living Rooms,” where investments in lighting, landscape, hardscape and seating can be intensified. The Oases occur at key locations and prioritize walkability and safety concerns, as well as provide critical shade infrastructure. Furthermore, the Oases advance Low Impact/Green Infrastructure features to reconcile ecosystem services within the corridor. These services are critical and work to support the Urban Heat Island Ordinance and Sustainability Plan of the city. This approach and methodology have served to minimize costs and schedule impacts while maximizing a phasable strategy overtime.
